Career in Nursing & Midwifery

Are you thinking about a career in Nursing or Midwifery? Study Coach is in the business of education, we are passionate about your learning and we support nursing/midwifery, social care students. We know from experience that non-traditional learners returning to education and making the transition into nursing will usually find studies at further or higher education to be challenging.  For Health Care Assistants moving up from level 2 to level 3 the transition  might sometimes seem like a massive mountain to climb,  Study Coach is here to help pave the way – Contact: Morel Benard.   Furthermore do visit UCAS to find out about University entry requirements for Nursing.

In previous blogs we have focused on topics such as how to get help with Essays, Writing Reflective assignments, preparing for a Research Project or Dissertation, Making use of Questionnaires when doing research and how best to tackle essays on topics such as COPD and Diabetes. If you are presently studying any of the above topics it might be worth your while to read some of our past blog posts.  In this present blog our focus is to offer some help to college students preparing to pursue a career in health, be it nursing or a midwifery career.

How to start a Nursing Career

Study for an Access Diploma

One route to secure a university nursing place is to study for an Access Diploma.  Your local Further Education College is likely to offer Access Courses, an alternative is to study for a Foundation course at your local University. Students studying care at level 3 (Access course) should be aware of Care Principles and the importance of Interpersonal Skills when caring for others. We believe that an awareness of Care Principles and knowledge of Social Skills will also be helpful to learners who are employed as carers working in care homes.

Presentation Skills

When studying care you will be assessed via writing essays and reports, you will sit exams and do presentations; different units will use a different assessment mode or a combination of modes to assess your learning. For example the unit providing knowledge on Care Principles will use the assessment mode of presentation, students could be tested via an individual or group presentation.

Learners are usually great at talking, they will all talk at the same time, however when the word presentation is mentioned, there is usually a deathly silence or behaviours change to a state of panic. “I can’t talk in front of the whole class, I’m just not good at it. I’m going to have a heart attack, look and feel my sweaty palms, I swear I’m having angina”.

Fear will negatively impact on your performance, so push aside fears and embrace the opportunity to show off your verbal skills and enjoy the presentation.  When presenting ensure that you use appropriate Volume in order to be heard and don’t rush the presentation, deliver at an appropriate pace, use clear speech.

Care Principles

Okay, let’s imagine that you have to deliver a short powerpoint presentation on Care Principles. The first step is to research what you need to cover according to the assessment criteria; you will need to show a general awareness of why care professionals should observe and adhere to the Care Principles. You might be instructed to discuss the following themes: Prioritise People, Preserve Safety, Effective Communication.

Help with Writing Nursing Essays

Prioritise People

You could choose to discuss the topic of Diversity in order to satisfy the Prioritise People theme. In this case you could say that nurses and midwives and other professionals should not make assumptions about patients and service users, professionals should recognise diversity and individual choice.

Preserve Safety

In creating a powerpoint slide for Preserve Safety you could focus on principle 17, in respect of Safeguarding. This principle highlight the importance of why health care professionals should raise concerns immediately if a vulnerable person is at risk and need extra support and protection. Nurses and care associates should take all reasonable steps to protect the vulnerable from harm, neglect and abuse. You need to know about safeguarding policies and laws.

Effective Communication

When addressing the code of Practise Effectively, you could consider focusing on Effective Communication. In this case you could explain that professionals should communicate effectively in writing and when speaking to patients, clients and the general public, ensuring that there is understanding.

It has truly been a pleasure to have had you as my psychology teacher. I do not think I would have understood half of what we learnt otherwise. THANK YOU for being so supportive and encouraging and for making Wednesday mornings unexpectedly amusing at times.
