Dissertation Writing, Essay Writing and What is Qualitative Research: Ask Study Coach

A research proposal, research project, dissertation and other academic assignments will require students to understand research methodology and qualitative research. Unfortunately, quite often students undertaking a research project often find they are not sufficiently knowledgeable about research methodology and will confuse Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research methods. Some students will mistakenly think that the two terms can be used interchangeably.

ASK STUDY COACH:

In this Blog the focus is on understanding Qualitative Research, we will look at Quantitative Research at a later date. Study Coach will raise some questions and provide some answers on the topic.

(1) Question: Can I use a survey in my qualitative research proposal?

Answer: A survey is likely to generate numeric data, qualitative is not about numbers, so using a survey would be inappropriate. In brief, don’t use a survey.

(2) Question: What is qualitative research?

Answer: Qualitative research focuses on gathering of mainly verbal data rather than measurements. Gathered information is then analysed in an interpretative manner, subjective, or impressionistic.

(3) Question: Should I create a hypothesis for my qualitative research project?

Answer: No. You will need to write a title for the research, write a statement based on the aim and objectives, what you want to explore in the research.

Qualitative Research Dissertation/Essay Writing

It is said that qualitative research is primarily subjective in approach as it seeks to understand human behaviour and reasons that govern such behaviour. Researchers have the tendency to become subjectively immersed in the subject matter in this type of research method.

Researchers also suggest that qualitative research is ideal for earlier phases of research projects while for the latter part of the research project, quantitative research is highly recommended (as stated earlier Study Coach will address quantitative method at a later date).

In qualitative research the researcher employs various data-gathering strategies, depending upon the approach of his/her research. Examples of data-gathering strategies used in Qualitative Research are individual in-depth interviews, structured and non-structured interviews, focus groups, narratives, content or documentary analysis and participant observation.
