Educating Entrepreneurs via YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook | Study Coach UK

Online courses for budding entrepreneurs, online bootcamps such as Grant Cardone’s 10X Challenge for those wishing to establish a business are being promoted at quite a fast rate. Education therefore seems to be the rage and Study Coach have noted that many courses being promoted could benefit from making use of psychological theoretical knowledge. Negative mindset, lack of confidence, communication skills, personality and sales are some of the topics often promoted via courses, but discussions are not often underpinned with research knowledge. In order to offer some knowledge on the topic of critical thinking, personality and sales, Study Coach will examine definitions of personality and highlight the importance of Critical Thinking Skills in business.

Learning via Facebook, Instagram and other Social Media

Grant Cardone 10X Challenge, Gary Vaynerchuk (Tea with Gary Vee) and other business/social influencers are now also wearing a teaching hat, and whilst this is welcoming news, it is noted that during teaching very little is being said about critical thinking skills. Young entrepreneurs learning via online courses, zoom meetings, social media posts are usually left pumped but simply reiterating what the Influencers say; this type of learning will only lead to dependency as opposed to creating independent thinkers. We do however appreciate that the business influencers focus is on imparting business ideas and strategies as opposed to teaching learning skills or setting out to become teachers.

Critical Thinking Skills for Entrepreneurs

Drafting a business document or writing a business presentation pitch have much in common with writing an essay for University submission. People setting up a business must learn to think critically, ideas will need to be weighed-up, in order to arrive at a good business decision. If working alone in a start-up business, the small business owner will have to rely on their own ability to categorise, select and differentiate business data and other related information. Furthermore, people in business will need the ability and critical skills to spot assumptions, identify inconsistencies, errors and apprise the merits of thoughts disseminated by thought leaders/influencers. Higher level critical thinking skills usually requires a combination of skills and attitudes, critical thinking skills will enable aspiring entrepreneurs to make the best decisions for their business.

Critical thinking is extremely valuable and should not be underestimated, for example, acquiring critical thinking skills will help business owners when doing the following and more:

Finding out where to locate the best resources

Evaluating deals presented

Communicating and dealing with criticism

Deciding on whether to appoint staff

Thinking outside the box/creative thinking

Planning a marketing campaign

Providing evidence to illustrate arguments when giving a talk

Thinking skills will help entrepreneurs when drafting letters/emails and making presentations. Paragraphs should be well structured and the style of writing should be in keeping with a formal business writing style, meaning that self-expression is not too chatty or flippant. Writing should be clear, ensure that there is nothing for readers to find confusing, particularly if you can’t afford a lawyer and you are drafting a business contract. In presenting general documents try to ensure that they provide a positive image for your brand.

If giving a formal talk self-expression should be free of slang and colloquialisms, technical vocabulary should be used correctly (this however depends on the nature of the business, in some businesses the use of slang and swearing is the norm).

To aid business success, here is a little mnemonic we developed based on Grant Cardone’s 10X five pillars idea. Our starting point is that the budding entrepreneur’s finances are in a dreadful mess:

F – finances

M – marketing

E – execution

S – sales

S – scaling

We are fully aware that there is negativity towards traditional college learning but we are also aware, given the many courses being promoted on social media that there is a huge need for education and that the subject of psychology plays an important role in business. Study Coach has many years delivering teaching and learning in psychology and we are therefore well placed to help educate those in business. The learning support offered to entrepreneurs via social media is totally free. Study Coach aim to help business owners to understand their own personality, mindset, self-esteem, perception; to understand people, in other words how to understand customers, partners and therefore how to build a successful business relationship. We understand that many aspiring entrepreneurs had a bad learning experience within the school/college system and many people left education many years ago, new theoretical learning might therefore first appear scary, but we are here to simplify the ideas for you, so that business owners can understand and implement as they feel fit.

Sales Personality

Have you the right kind of personality to become an entrepreneur and become successful at getting sales? This leads us to the question of what is a right kind of personality for selling and becoming an entrepreneur? Tack suggest that people will often define a sales personality by a salesman who is over-selling. A salesman who is known to over-sell is sometimes referred to as having the ‘gift of the gab’ (talk endlessly). A loud fast talker extrovert is therefore usually labelled as having a sales personality but this does not mean that the quiet person with a winning smile does not have a sales personality. The entrepreneur can be an extrovert or he/she can be an introvert, but more importantly he/she will need to possess a sales personality as opposed to a salesman/saleswoman personality.

A sales personality is one that builds friendship and understanding with the greatest number of perspective buyers or customers. According to Tack’s research on sales promotion, the development of a sales personality will enable people to:

gain the confidence of a customer

win the respect of a customer

win the friendship of a customer

indicate to the customer that he/she cannot be browbeaten

In respect of a salesman personality, there is the danger that the salesman will:

leave customers with an untrustworthy impression

antagonise the customer/buyer

be so weak that the customer knows he can dominate the salesman

Psychology & Personality

According to Kluckhohn and Murray (1953) ‘every man is in certain respects like all other men, like some other men and like no other men’.

Kluckhohn and Murray is clearly suggesting that humans have much in common with other humans and yet there are individual differences between humans. People are similar to and different to each other, our individual differences makes us unique. From a psychological standpoint according to Allport (1961) personality is described as the dynamic organisation within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determines his characteristic behaviour and thoughts. The factors involved in shaping the development of personality are a combination of both the physical and psychological.

A further definition of personality from a psychological perspective is: ‘those relatively stable and enduring aspects of individuals which distinguish them from other people, making them unique, but which at the same time allow people to be compared with each other’.

Self-Awareness, Perception of Personality

Most personality theories share the assumption that personality is something that belongs to the individual/the person. Personality is deemed to be stable and therefore relatively permanent because our behaviour will be consistent from one situation to another; this is however one perspective. Other theorists argue that behaviour will differ due to situational factors and therefore vary across situations, this is known as trait versus situation debate. It is argued that we have traits that are common and of course individuals do have unique characteristics and qualities; personality is constructed in the course of social interactions and constructed via 3 elements, namely: a person’s self presentation, the perception of the presentation, in other words how the audience perceive the presentation and self awareness. From the latter definition personality is not simply something that a person has, it is more about how we relate to other people and how we deal with the world in general.
