Essay Writing, Dissertation Writing & Stress | Study Coach UK

Stress is all around us, whether studying, employed or running a business, at some point stress will impact on our lives. Study Coach UK is here to help you understand stress. I’m going to strip away the physiological terms of stress to simplify matters, so that lifelong learners, non-students will be able to benefit from the information provided.

Physiology/Psychology and Stress

In stripping away physiological terms this should indicate to readers that biological terms are linked to stress, as a matter of fact stress is a combination of two academic subjects: namely, physiology and psychology.

Eustress (Good Stress)

Furthermore, I’m sure that you must have heard that not all Stress is bad, there is good Stress, Yes good Stress, otherwise known as Eustress. The kind of Stress that can propel you to greatness, enable you to climb mountains, break the world record for the 100 meters, 400 meters race and other high adrenalin pursuits (that is good stress).

Writing Essay on Distress

Our focus is bad Stress, the type that can cause distress (the nasty type of stress). Study Coach would like to help you to recognise stress warnings, so you can take steps to look after yourself and keep being happy or relatively happy. University assignment briefs will usually ask students to write about distress as opposed to eustress.

Nursing Students Writing Essays

Nursing students will sometimes say: ’Morel, I’m stressed, pressured, stressed, I’ve got placement, I’ve got work and 2 essays to write, it’s too much for one human being’. I can only sympathise and empathise with students and I tell them about my Stress management techniques. By the way Study Coach supports university students with essays, research projects, dissertation, so if you are at university or know of someone who is at university and who could benefit from some tutorial support, then get in touch. Send an email to: info@studycoachuk.com my name is Morel Benard.

Stress Terms

I would like to give you some Key words for Stress, the words are:

Individualism

Perception

Event/Environment

The understanding is that stress is how the INDIVIDUAL, PERCEIVES an EVENT or ENVIRONMENT – If the PERCEPTION is NEGATIVE then it could develop into STRESS

Now I can hear you saying, Morel, Morel, what do you mean by EVENT and ENVIRONMENT?

Good question, so let me give you some examples:

EVENT: going shopping, attending a wedding, doing a presentation, going on a date, sitting an exam

ENVIRONMENT: Cold environment, hot environment, crowded train, standing at the bus-stop, visiting a hospital environment

Perceive/Perception

PERCEPTION, is basically how we see life, how we interpret what we see, through our senses. Example, we might PERCEIVE a situation as being hostile.

Stress Example/Scenario

Imagine that we’re walking down the road and we come across 50 – 60 men, all walking very briskly, looking extremely serious. On first seeing the crowd of serious looking men, we might believe that they are marching, going to fight some battle, but then we might notice that they are all wearing the same coloured scarf and that the word ‘football’ is printed on the scarf, because we have a concept of ‘football’ then we no longer feel threatened by the men. If we support that particular football team, we might smile and say hello to the men. However from an INDIVIDUAL level if we have no concept about ‘football’ (imagine that this scene took place years ago, before the advent of television, computers, social media and we are new to the country and where we are coming from, meaning our mother country, we don’t play football, you’ve never heard of football) then in this case we might actually remain with the belief that the men are going to fight a battle. We might even feel threatened and start to fear that the men will attack us – all because of what we PERCEIVE.

Individual Differences and Stress

This brings me on to the point that INDIVIDUAL differences is very important in Stress. Meaning that what might be stressful to me, might not be stressful to you, because we PERCEIVE the world differently. Where I see negative, you see positive.

Stressor

The term Stressor is simply the same as EVENT or ENVIRONMENT, meaning the CAUSE of Stress. In brief everything can be a Stressor, depending on the Individual. For example: you car, you family, job, no job, the weather, traffic, mobile phone, you nails (broken), eyebrows, buttons, spiders, clothes, Christmas (everything is a potential stressor).

Stress Responses

The term Stress Response basically means how you react/how you choose to respond to the potential STRESSOR. Example: start sweating, swearing, shouting, raised blood pressure, shaking, try to run away, feel sick, run to bed, loss of appetite, crying, all these and more are Stress Responses

(Running away is linked to the concept of fight or flight response – Walter Cannon is the theorist). Note: that since everything is a potential stressor, stress will only take place if we choose to respond negatively. If there is no negative response then = NO STRESS.

How do I deal with Stress? I will write about Stress Management at some other point in time.
