GOOD ESSAY GRADES

We should always aim to produce our best work, we believe in aiming high and we motivate students to be the best that they can be. Students should aim to get a first class degree or a 2.1, having said this, the reality is that not everyone will achieve a first class mark, however everyone has the potential to achieve and Study Coach will motivate you to do so. Here at Study Coach UK we believe in working smart and hard, we believe that all students can achieve if they have an understanding of what they need to do to improve essay grades. Critical analytical thinking can be problematic for students, but Study Coach is here to mentor you. From our experience some students also struggle to distinguish between descriptive writing and discursive essay writing, we work on a one-to-one online basis and will help students to understand the art of raising a discussion. In order to produce a discursive essay and show off understanding of the issues, students need to apply knowledge to a situation or a case study, by doing so students will begin to raise discursive skills, as opposed to simply reiterating what is found in textbooks or in research articles.

RESEARCH/DISSERTATION WRITING

If writing a research project or dissertation you will no doubt need to create a proposal/plan to show how you intend to carryout the research. You will need to submit the proposal to your University tutor for approval. Your chosen dissertation title will need to be specific. For example, if the general area of research is Domestic Abuse, your research title could be: A case study: Exploring domestic abuse on college campus in North Dakota. You could even become more specific and focus on domestic abuse between same sex partners, if you have knowledge that there is a phenomenon taking place.

Dissertation students will need to establish whether it is a literature review dissertation proposal they need to create or whether they will be doing a primary piece of research. The dissertation will require students to have good knowledge of research methodology and Study Coach UK is here to help.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT ONLINE

Our academic support includes encouraging students to engage with their relevant professional bodies. For example if you’re studying for an LLB, it is a good idea to become familiar with the Law Society. You could start to make enquiries about securing voluntary work at a law firm and start networking (it is never too early to start). Education is changing with more establishments choosing to deliver degree courses completely or partially online, we predict that more students will need academic support. Study Coach is experienced in offering academic support online and is best placed to support students. We offer a range of online support and this includes giving guidance on University and College courses and future Careers. We encourage students to deliberate long and hard prior to committing themselves to a particular course of study. In choosing a degree, we hope that students have thought about the application of the degree, in other words, students have considered their future career.  If you are studying nursing or a related health course, we suggest that you become familiar with CQC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council and start to learn about caring principles. Social Work students, you should try to join the BASW.

It is therefore good to become a student member of a relevant professional body in view of training contracts, internships, paid-unpaid opportunities and to connect with professionals in your field of study. Learning is all around us, through engaging with professional bodies the interaction can help to bring classroom learning to life.

Essay Support and Dissertation Support to help University and College Students Achieve

HOW DO I WRITE AN ESSAY

This is a simple question, the short answer is that learners need to have subject knowledge, study skills and realise the importance of following assessment outcomes/criteria. For example if you have been given the task to write an essay on communication skills, but you have no knowledge of communication theories, then you will fail to provide sufficient evidence to support the essay. Therefore, in order to write the essay you need to have knowledge and be prepared to extend your knowledge by doing further research. Different types of essays will require different skills, an academic essay will need to be structured in academic fashion and referenced in accordance with referencing rules. If you are writing a reflective essay you are allowed to write in the first person, but some education establishments might stipulate that first person writing should not take place in the body of the reflective work.

GUIDE  TO ESSAY WRITING

  1. Create a search strategy
  2. Conduct the search for relevant literature
  3. Read and make notes
  4. Analyse notes and edit
  5. Make an essay plan (guided by the learning outcomes/criteria)

If the essay topic is to discuss the application of a client-centred approach when working with vulnerable clients, you will need to locate research on the concept and provide a definition. You will need to refer to Humanistic psychology and apply to your group of vulnerable clients, along with defining vulnerability and addressing the criteria in view of the assignment. Care should be taken to keep the focus on your particular area of study, for example if you’re studying psychology then you can delve into Rogers explanation of client-centred. However if studying social work you should keep the focus on social work principles and issues and relate to working in a client-centred way. The aim is to briefly explain concepts and to spend more time on applying the concepts, thereby raising academic arguments and showing your tutor/marker that you understand and can apply the concept in practice.

NURSING ESSAY EXAMPLE

If you are drafting an essay on the Nurses’ Role and you have been given  the freedom to choose any nurse role to write about, then simply make your choice and define the role. For example, the role of a mental health nurse is very different to a children’s nurse role. Let readers know in the introduction of the essay which role you will be discussing and analysing. Take the opportunity to show off your knowledge about nursing roles by making comparisons between child nursing and adult nursing or mental health nursing. Do take care however not to stray too far away from your chosen role, meaning, keep the focus on the child nurse obligations and responsibilities.

In selecting relevant literature make sure that you refer to the assessment criteria for the essay and that you are familiar with the child’s medical notes or given scenario. When writing about caring for young children do remember that consideration should also be given to the child’s family and that the issue of effective communication is important.

ESSAY WRITING EXAMPLE CASE STUDY NURSING

Here is an example of a CASE STUDY – Miss Tanner is age 23, she has been a smoker since age 11, she has heart problems and Type 2 diabetes and she is suffering with acute exacerbation of COPD. Miss Tanner is categorised as obese and suffering from an eating disorder. She has been referred to the Community Respiratory Specialist Nurses’ team and you are a 3rd year nurse on placement accompanying the qualified nurse in order to assess Miss Tanner’s situation. Miss Tanner lives in a flat with her young daughter and partner. Miss Tanner is in full-time employment, her partner have limited understanding about COPD.

Miss Tanner is experiencing acute exacerbations, meaning that her breathing is prone to suddenly get worse, quickly moving from mild to severe and life-threatening.
