The question of how to write a good essay is often asked, the answer is not simple, there are many variables to consider, but we will attempt to give students some guidance on how to work towards writing a good standard essay.

How to write an Essay

A piece of academic writing gains its structure and shape from several elements. In answer to the question of how to write an essay the organisation or planning stage is very important, good organisation of your thoughts and your materials and your writing will show through in the final product. Design: this is about your argument, what you’re trying to say, this should be clear and run through the whole piece of writing. In designing the assignment, you should keep the reader (marker) in mind and plan how to make the content clear, so the reader is able to make a connection between the ideas put forward. In deciding the best way of how to write an essay, create a plan to ensure that the ideas will flow.

What is a good Essay

Stella Cottrell writes about Study Skills and she states that most experienced writers rewrite their work over and over refining their thoughts, finding a better way of saying something, making a long winded section of a piece of writing a bit briefer or adding more details to develop an idea. Refining ideas, rephrasing and editing are some of the activities students will need to do in order to create a good essay. The question of what is a good essay or what is required to create a good essay is to ensure that the learning outcomes, assessment criteria and the overall aim of the assignment is satisfied to a good standard.

How to write a good Essay

In order to write a good essay, your answer should focus on the title. When writing the introduction, explain how you interpret the question and explain to the reader the issues you are going to explore. It is advisable to indicate how you will deal with each issue and in which order. Develop your arguments and support with relevant evidence and your point of view. The first sentence should introduce a main idea and this should be developed into a paragraph, in order to show off your understanding it is advisable if permitted by the assessment guidance to offer relevant examples. Give details (but don’t waffle) link examples to research evidence. Use quotations to support your work, but don’t simply quote researchers’ words, you need to critique/evaluate the quote and ensure that you provide a page number for the quote in view of referencing. Link paragraphs to previous paragraphs so that ideas connect and arguments flow.

The conclusion is where you will draw all the ideas together and present a summary of the work, do not introduce any new material in the conclusion. You should summarise your arguments and main points, show how they relate to each other and state your general conclusions, you should make it clear why those conclusions are important and significant.

In the last sentence, sum up your argument very briefly, linking it to the title of the essay. To complete the presentation of the work you will need to construct a bibliography, list all books, articles, materials you have used and ensure that you follow the referencing style recommended by the University.

At University or College you will no doubt be assigned a Personal Tutor (Lecturer) to support you with your academic and pastoral concerns, this is great but the problem is that lecturers have their own heavy workload and are hard pressed to find time to act as personal tutors. If you are new to University or College life, you will be told ‘Don’t be afraid to ask for help, it’s what we are here for’. The sentiment is great, but the reality is very different. The reality is that you might end up feeling that you are pestering your lecturers and personal tutor. Some lecturers may also start to question your suitability and competence to undertake your chosen course of study, unfortunately this is the reality of what is taking place, the situation is not great and with more degree courses being delivered online, we anticipate that more students will need online support in order to reduce descriptive writing and learn how to write a critical thinking essay and dissertation.

How to create a discursive essay

Students should aim to create discursive work as opposed to descriptive assignments, often students will ask the question of what is a discursive essay. The short answer is that to produce a discursive essay, students need to do much more than simply reiterate/rephrase researchers ideas. Here is an exercise you could carry out in order to work on improving your present standard of essay writing skills. First, select one piece of writing you have done, jot down a list of five extra details you could add to give a fuller picture, add something new (an idea) from having read a piece of relevant research, add a personal opinion about some aspect of what you wrote, now try to rewrite the piece adding the new details.

Play around with what you have written for example you could change the order of the sentences around, rephrase, change some of the words, add more details, change the order of the paragraphs around, raise new questions and provide possible answers and give a rationale for your answers. You could write from the opposite point of view or take a different perspective to show off your critical thinking skills and create a discursive essay. The aim at university level is always to reduce descriptive writing and learn how to write discursive essays.

Stress & Essay Writing

Anxiety about writing is very common at university, students will sometimes say that they start a sentence, cross it out and start again, cross it out throw the paper in the bin, start a sentence cross it out, some students will read the essay title and panic, convincing themselves that they don’t know anything about the essay topic. Stella Cottrell’s Study Skills book gives many examples of how anxiety can impact on students self-confidence, students have reported the following: I can’t get down to it – I keep putting it off and then I’m in a huge rush to finish it and my mind goes empty – I don’t know where to begin – I’m not as good as other people, the ideas go round and round in my head – I’m embarrassed about my spelling, about my writing – I worry about my grammar and punctuation. Students have posted similar sentiments on social media about their anxiety levels when faced with essay writing. One suggestion of how to reduce the stress of essay writing is to note down your thoughts and observations about any difficulties you have in getting started, writing down your stressors and reflecting on them can help you to manage stress.

Deciding in general what to do and how to collect relevant information or materials to complete the essay task, planning the order to do things, carrying out the plan, checking that you were going about the task in the right way, reflecting on how you could do the essay better next time, are all ways of making improvements.
