International Women’s Day | Poet: Morel Benard
March is International Women’s Month, it is a great opportunity to spotlight the achievements of women of the past. I expect that in every aspect of life a woman has contributed to world progress, I won’t attempt to consider all aspects of life, instead I will contain myself to poetry.
Morel Benard – Poet
I am a social commentator, and this is reflective in my poetry, I feel it is important to raise awareness about issues impacting on people’s lives. I’m also an educator and believe that poetry is a marvellous way to help educate people.
Purpose
The purpose for writing poetry blogs is simply to raise awareness about my work and to make connections. If I don’t communicate then people won’t know that I exist. My focus is to present a verse or two of poetry and hoping it will lead to having dialogue with people. You can write to me at studycoach8@gmail.com
Book of Poetry
I’m working on my first book of poetry, and I’m excited about the project. I don’t mind if my work is classified as ‘poetic thoughts’ ‘social commentary’ or any other label. I’m not caught up with labels, I’m driven to inspire others, to give hope, to help motivate, to speak my truth.
Audio Book of Poetry
I like working with audio and will record the poems and accompanying ideas following the publication of each book. The audio recordings will give people more access to my poems, since listening can take place while we are commuting or doing other activities. The more engagement I have, hopefully the more feedback I will receive. I want to get to know my readers/listeners.
Inspirational Poetry
I hope that my work will inspire people to exercise their own creativity. I enjoy reading academic books, getting lost in theoretical ideas, critiquing research studies and so on, but I get greater enjoyment from creating my own work. Sometimes I get so lost in the creative process that I forget about time.
Poetry about Life
Don’t know if I’m becoming overly suspicious about censorship, but I get the sense that there is an increase in policing free speech, increased restrictions on what creators are allowed to say. The crazy thing is that censoring thoughts will not get rid of the thought. It is difficult to silence a person’s mind, thoughts have a mind of their own, an important part of being human.
International Women’s Month
Putting the spotlight on the life and work of Sojourner Truth. I believe that Sojourner Truth was a remarkable woman; she stood-up for women’s rights, though at the time she had limited civil rights. She was a melanin woman, an American, an enslaved woman, yet she was able to advocate for women who were part of the enslavement and suppressive regime.
Sojourner Truth
The aim of the poem is to raise awareness about this remarkable woman, I know that students in the UK doing GCSE would have been introduced to Sojourner Truth’s speech, title ‘Ain’t I a Woman’. Americans will know her name, but in other parts of the world, people might not be familiar with Sojourner. In view of International Women’s Month, I have therefore chosen to spread the word far and wide about Sojourner Truth. Here is a verse penned by me:
BELLA – SOJOURNER
Bella, Isabella, you have paved the way
Women of the world should know your name
You have reaped, ploughed and advocate
Liberated fair women who kept you in chains
You spoke your truth, to set other women free
Your words brought powerful men to their knees
Bella, Isabella, woman with a beautiful mind
An enslaved woman with intellectual might
The power of your words were a mighty sword
Though your civil rights were being ignored
Bella, Ain’t I a Woman, Isabella Baumfree
Sojourner Truth is the name known to you and me
(Morel Benard)
What Poetry means to Me – Morel Benard
There are many poems to be written about Sojourner Truth, the name Isabella Baumfree will tell a story or two about slavery. The ‘free’ in ‘Baumfree’ is interesting (food for thought).
Women Empowerment
I did say in a previous post that my first book of poetry would be on the topic of Women Empowerment, but a woman is allowed to change her mind, so it might be my second book. I have a portfolio of work on the topic of Love and am considering publishing some of the poems. There is a lot of hate in the world, particularly at this present time, we need love.
Books with Amazon – Morel Benard
I have a short story titled ‘How to Stop a Workplace Bully’ it is about a woman (Yasmin) in a corporate setting; it is published with Amazon. I also have a short adventure story about a true tsunami event that took place in 1692, the title of the adventure story is ‘Pirate City’ – see Amazon – Morel Benard author.
