In a recent podcast the topic of self-reflection and identifying personal strengths and weaknesses were discussed. It is argued that self-reflection should enable us to acknowledge our present position, in respect of skills and from this position we can take steps to make progress. Study Coach would like to encourage you to evaluate your current strengths and weaknesses, keeping in mind what you would like to achieve. The acronym SWOT is a useful tool that you can use once you have decided on what you want to improve.

S.W.O.T.

The meaning of SWOT is:

S = strengths

W = weaknesses

O = opportunities

T = threats

(You might know a different adaptation of SWOT, but this is Study Coach’s working definition). Once we have done some self-reflection and decided on what we want to improve we can apply SWOT to help us achieve our goals.

Study Coach SWOT Scenario

To explain how SWOT can be applied, here is a little example: Worker John Smith, has a goal, and the goal is to improve his Speech Writing Skills. John recently realised that his company is going through some changes and the company will need to recruit someone to do Public Speaking. If John could secure this new post it would greatly add to his income. John did some self-reflection on his suitability to work as a Public Speaker, following the period of self-reflection he applied SWOT to identify his strengths and weaknesses, and to make a masterplan to secure the new job.

John will therefore need to think about a possible job specification for the job of Public Speaker, and he will need to identify his strengths for the role in accordance with the stipulated job specification.  He will need to repeat the process to identify his weaknesses in view of the role.

 ‘O’ is for opportunities, so he will need to identify opportunities to help him overcome his weaknesses (see if you can think what could constitute opportunities). ’T’ is for threats, John will need to consider what sort of things/events, could threaten and so place blocks on his opportunities.
