Study Coach UK Online Learning Blog on LinkedIn
Reading skills are essential in order to evaluate ideas and to think critically, therefore Study Coach suggest that you give some thought to how you can become a more effective reader. If you have a learning need such as dyslexia or you are a slow reader, it is okay, don’t feel pushed by anyone to gallop through the pages of a book. It is your reading, it should be at your own pace and the more you practise you will extend your vocabulary and improve understanding. Our focus is to support people to develop Critical Thinking Skills in preparation for business or employment, while we self-isolate take part in some learning. Study Coach’s learning resources are also posted on LinkedIn, see Morel Benard Articles and Posts, you are welcomed to join the page.

READING TASK
First, read the following on COPD and the Corona Virus (sorry, can’t get away from the topic, I need something most people can relate to: hence COVID). Once you have completed the reading try to attempt the ‘Thinking Task’.
COPD & CORONA CASE STUDY
People with underlying health issues such as COPD are at greater risks should they contract the Corona Virus. What is the meaning of COPD? It is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. COPD affects the airways making breathing difficult; a COPD is a respiratory disease (chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema). Many researchers such as Coton et, al (2017); Gold (2017) and others have a research interest in COPD.
Mr XYZ is age 68, he has been a smoker since age 14, he has heart problems and Type 2 diabetes and have tested positive for Corona Virus. Mr XYZ is experiencing acute exacerbations, meaning that his breathing is prone to suddenly get worse, quickly moving from mild to severe and life-threatening. He has been referred to hospital. Mr XYZ lives in a flat with his wife, daughter and two dogs. Mrs XYZ use to work part-time, she is diabetic and takes insulin, and the daughter was in full-time employment at a supermarket, but due to Mr XYZ’s diagnosis the family are now in self-isolation.
THINKING TASK
Critical awareness sharpens our minds, helping us to pay closer attention to details and become more systematic when appraising situations. Critical abilities can help us to have a better understanding about the lives of others. See if you can reflect on the case study and:
- Identify any potential issues for the family
- Find the best way to problem solve issues
