Help With Essays

When faced with an assignment, your first task should always be to start the research process. Once you have read and summarised research notes, you should then decide on how to structure the assignment (be guided by the allowed word count). For example, if you’re writing about the role of the Child Health Nurse, you could begin by saying that nursing young children carries a great deal of responsibility, particularly if the sick child has limited language skills. It is therefore vital that those choosing to care for children should have excellent communication skills and listening skills. McKinney et, al (2017) research on communicating with children highlight a range of reasons why the child health nurse should be an effective communicator, both in the use of verbal and non-verbal communication skills. The nurse must develop skills in interpreting children’s behaviour, this is particularly important when nursing very young children with limited language skills. Communication skills is furthermore vital for building relationships with parents and carers, and in order to discuss the patient’s care with the multi-disciplinary team.

The role of the child nurse is therefore quite different to other areas of nursing, due to young children’s vulnerability to disease. During the early stages of development, young children are more prone to illnesses, the child nurse therefore has a higher duty of care for his/her patient, and need to be acutely observant to monitor the child’s care needs. If the young child is unable to call for help and the child nurse is not observant then this might lead to a critical situation. On an adult ward patients who are in distress are usually able to express themselves, to alert the adult nurse. In the case of a children’s ward the situation is therefore different, where young children are likely to have difficulties expressing how they are feeling. A higher degree of monitoring is therefore required when nursing children.

When writing about the child nurse, you might also want to say that in cases where children are of age and able to communicate, the child nurse has a duty to ensure that the child has knowledge and understanding of the medical preparation and procedures that he/she will need to undergo. The adult nurse will also undertake a similar role with adult patients, but clearly when informing a child/young person about medical procedures there will be a greater level of sensitivity.

Nursing Qualities & Skills

There are many desirable qualities and skills that the nurse should have. The Royal College of Nursing (2018) highlight good communication skills to be essential (nurses need to explain treatment). Observational skills and working in a flexible manner are required to care for numbers of patients. Team working skills are clearly important, since the nurse will be working with a multi-disciplinary team including doctors, psychologists, health care assistants, social workers. Organisational skills are essential, since managing time and workload are extremely important, ensuring that records are correctly documented. There are many other skills that you may wish to discuss in an essay when considering the role of the child nurse. Qualities such as sensitivity and empathy and being intuitive could also feature in your work. You should ensure that you engage with the topic and could also consider the value of Compassion and Commitment.
