Criminologists and sociologists argue that fear of crime is irrational, meaning that people are worrying about criminal acts that are unlikely to happen. I am sure that some of you reading this will be saying:

‘I don’t believe that fear of crime is irrational. Crime is real, these criminologists and sociologists should come and live where I live, they will soon see that there is something to worry about; in my neighbourhood fear or crime is based on evidence, people are walking around with knives/guns. Fear of crime is very rational, it is very real, seeing is believing, come to my estate, I am certainly not irrational’.

Okay, Okay! Though some criminologists and sociologists may still want to maintain that fear of crime is irrational, what we do know is that we will often hear political leaders promising to tackle crime, if we vote for them. This in itself, gives evidence that politicians running for government and those in government are of the belief that there is a problem with crime. If our leaders accept that there is a problem with crime, then it supports the argument that crime is alive and kicking, and therefore it is not surprising that the general public have a rational fear of crime.

In explaining this phenomena on Governing though Crime, I will focus on the following: War on Crime and Politics, Fear of Crime, Minority Communities, Governing Crime.
